The Animal Support Building zoo keepers welcomed some new additions into the zoo collection on February 28th; Baby Hedgehogs! The Como Zoo lost a wonderful animal last week when Gordy the gorilla died unexpectedly. Gordy was 23 years old. The morning of 19 April, he was acting normal, eating his breakfast in holding while the primate keepers cleaned the gorilla exhibit. After a routine weekly meeting with our veterinarian, zoo keepers went to let the animals into their exhibits when they found Gordy unresponsive.

After a very long Minnesota winter, the orangutans at Como Zoo were let outside for the first time this year. All three adults explored the exhibit thoroughly munching on their breakfast as they moved around. Jaya, the one year old clung to Mom Markisa's back, not quite sure of his surroundings. On April 25th, we welcomed a new zebra into our collection. While she still has the coloration and fuzziness of a baby, she is almost a year old and came to us from Mesker Park Zoo in Evansville, IN. Spring has sprung and that means all the progress made on Polar Bear Odyssey over the winter is now starting to show! Recently, construction workers removed the protective plastic covering on the new rock work in the exhibit and it looks great! I don't know what the fascination is, but visitors to the zoo love to watch zoo keepers work. On September 23rd Max, a 26 year old harbor seal, was transported to the University of Minnesota for removal of an ocular tumor on his right eye. Dr. LaRocca, a veterinary ophthalmologist, worked in collaboration with Como Zoo’s vet Dr. Trent and the University of Minnesota veterinary staff. The surgery was a success and Max had his one month check up with Dr. LaRocca today and is healing well.

This years festival was a huge success. The weather was beautiful which helped in the amazing turn out. This years theme was 'Elements of Tea.' There were a few booths that sampled tea, hot and cold. Each day there is something exciting happening at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. On Saturday there were two company picnics, wedding ceremonies and wedding receptions.
